Mentorship Matters

[MUSIC PLAYING]

A few alumni stopped by campus recently, and High Point University surprised them by reuniting them with their mentors. These alumni work all over the country, at Amazon, Facebook, Apple, Google, and other impressive companies. But they all have one thing in common-- an impactful HPU mentor that guided them along the way. Listen to these graduates explain why mentorship matters at High Point University.

As my career unfolds, I think about you and the impact you made on me.

You were my professor.

You were my advisor.

You were my success coach.

But really, you were so much more than that-- you were my mentor.

There were days that were hard, when I didn't know if I could do it. But you pushed me, so I kept going.

There were sleepless nights consumed by studying, writing paper--

After paper--

After paper.

Perfecting my research.

Preparing for conferences.

Practicing for interviews.

Going over my speech.

Choosing my major.

Studying abroad.

You said I could be an attorney someday.

You said I could be a doctor someday. You said I could do it.

But you believed I could interview Leonardo DiCaprio at the Toronto International Film Festival. You said I could be a writer someday.

You were my mentor, and you believed in me.

That's why I'm here now.

In New York, working on the national sales team at Google.

In Seattle, working as a patent attorney at BakerHostetler.

In San Francisco, working as an HR practitioner at Facebook.

In Durham, working as a doctor at Duke University.

But you already know that, because I emailed you.

Because I called you to let you know I got the job.

We celebrated together. You're still cheering me on today. Dr. Hayes now I'm going to cry.

James how are you sir? Good to see you again.

Nice to see you. Facebook now, huh?

Oh, yeah.

You did a great-- you did a great job today.

Oh, thank you so much.

Oh my God. I thought it was you running across the screen. How are you?

I'm great. How are you doing?

Good to see you.

Welcome back.

I was like, was that you?

I saw you look--

And I kind of like, started, How are you?

I'm great!

So thank you. You're my hero. And you're literally the best, and you helped me get here.

And you told me I could do it.

You knew I could.

So I did.

Thank you for mentoring me.

Thank you for the other students that you'll mentor along the way.

Because High Point University knows mentorship matters, and your mentorship really mattered to me.

Thank you. Thank you.
